About Claude
What answers you, and what it is not
The companion in The Six Pages is Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. We say that plainly, in the app, before you write anything — and again before you speak out loud. You should always know what you're talking to.
What Claude is not
Claude is not a therapist, a counselor, a crisis worker, or a person. It cannot diagnose you, treat you, or give you professional advice of any kind. Nothing it says is a clinical opinion, because there is no clinician involved. It is software that reads carefully and answers with care, and that is a real thing — but it is not the other thing, and we won't blur the two.
What Claude is given about you
This is the part most apps don't explain, so here it is.
Claude doesn't meet you cold each time. When you write, the app passes along context from your own earlier work — what you wrote on previous pages, what you've said in this session, and a summary of where you've been. That's deliberate. It's what lets the app hold the thread instead of asking you to explain yourself again every time.
That context is your own writing, returned to your own conversation. It isn't a profile. It isn't assembled from anything you didn't write. It isn't shared with anyone.
Your writing is not training data
Anthropic does not train its models on content sent through its commercial API, and we have not given permission for anything else. What you write here does not become part of any model. It is not mined, aggregated, or studied.
When you speak instead of type
Voice uses a second service, ElevenLabs, which turns your speech into words and Claude's reply into sound. ElevenLabs doesn't decide what gets said — the answer comes from the same place it does when you type.
- Your audio is not stored for us. It passes through the provider, becomes text, and is scheduled for same-day deletion — in our own testing it disappeared within minutes. We describe that as what we have observed rather than as a guarantee, because the timing belongs to their systems.
- We've turned off transcript retention on our voice agent, so ElevenLabs keeps no record of the conversation.
- The text of what was said goes into your own session so you can read it back. That copy is yours, and you can delete it.
- While you're speaking, the screen says not recorded, so you don't have to take our word for it from a policy page.
You'll see a notice explaining all of this before your first voice conversation, and you have to accept it before anything records or transmits.
Why an AI at all
Because of who this was built for. The person this app is for reaches for it at two in the morning, when the people who love them are asleep and a waiting list is eleven weeks long. A human is better. A human is not always there.
This is not a replacement for people. Everything in the app that matters points outward — toward the friend you haven't called, toward the professional you've been putting off, toward the crisis line if it's that kind of night. What Claude does is hold the space between those moments so it isn't empty.
